P a n e l    S e s s i o n s

·         11:00 am – Large Conference Room

30 Minute Download – Breaking Into Comics, the Dos & Donts

Join Dwayne McDuffie, Steven Grant and Steve Niles for a discussion on what it takes to get your foot in the door and eventually step in to the room.  What does a good pitch look like?  What happens in a portfolio review?  How do you build (and maintain) a network? What should potentials know about the care and feeding of editors?

·         12:00  noon – Large Conference Room

Drawing for Comics, More Than Still Life

Deryl Skelton and Gilbert Hernandez know that anybody with enough time and patience can make a great "splash" image, but conveying that sense of motion is much trickier.  Add the need to lay out the panels on top of that and & it's a lot more than still life.

·         12:00 noon – Jewel Box Theater

Top Shelf, Fantagraphics & the World of Indie Publishing

Two of the most opinionated men in comics, Chris Staros and Gary Groth have been there, done it, and are still printing the T-shirt. DIYers and small publishers have things to offer readers and creators that the "big two" don't and never will.

·         1:00 pm – Large Conference Room

Comic Books Its Not Just for Superheroes Anymore

Steve Niles, Deryl Skelton and Chris Staros get on the soapbox about romance, horror, crime, "realism", fantasy, science fiction, autobiography, humor, westerns, war, and how there's a comic for everybody.

·         1:00 pm – Jewel Box Theater

In the Aether: the Future of Comics Online

Join Steven Grant, Charles Holbert and Drew Edwards for pointed observations on how the web is changing the comics in terms of publishing, content, delivery, and marketing.

·         2:00 pm – Large Conference Room

      Sex & Race in Comics

Through their critically acclaimed works, Dwayne McDuffie and Gilbert Hernandez have had a lot to say about "the rest of us" -- characters who aren't male, straight, or WASPs. This sequel to last year's "Other" panel promises to be just as wide ranging and thought provoking.

·         2:00 pm – Jewel Box Theater

The 10 Cent Plague – The Great Comic Book Scare and How it Changed America

In the years between World War II and the emergence of television as a mass medium, American popular culture as we know it was first created - in the pulpy, boldly illustrated pages of comic books. No sooner had this new culture emerged than it was beaten down by church groups, community bluestockings and a McCarthyish Congress - only to resurface with a crooked smile on its face in Mad magazine. The story of the rise and fall of those comic books has never been fully told - until David Hajdu's remarkable new book The Ten-Cent Plague. He will talk with Jarret Keene about this period in the history of comics, their effect on our current culture and how censorship is still alive in today's world.
