“8” A New Play by Dustin Lance Black
Join us for the Nevada debut of “8,” a play chronicling the federal trial for marriage equality. Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film Milk and the film J. Edgar, based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
The play "8" is based on the court case Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, which sought to overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage in California. The case is now known as Perry vs. Brown.
Community members, students and local actors will interpret the voices of David Boies, Ted Olson, Charles Cooper and Judge Vaughn Walker, among many others, in the San Francisco trial where cameras were barred.
This event is co-sponsored by Out West 2013 and the Nevada Conservatory Theatre at UNLV. American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact are licensing “8” for free in order to spur action, dialogue, and understanding. A moderated discussion about marriage equality will follow.
Free and open to the public. For more information, please call 507-3459.
