Frequently Asked Questions

Category: Library Catalog FAQs
Q: Can I suggest you buy a book or DVD?

A: If there is a book, DVD, or other item you think would be a useful addition to the Library District's collection, you can suggest that using the "Contact Us" link. One choice in the drop-down box is "Suggest an Item".

Fill in as much information as you can about that item. Be sure to indicate which library you normally use. If the Library District does buy that title, we want to be sure one copy goes to your library.

The Library District takes your suggestions very seriously. We cannot, however, purchase every title. We will evaluate your suggestion to see if it fits in with the Library District's Collection Development Policy. You can check with your library in six to 12 weeks, to see if we've purchased the item.

If you'd like to suggest we purchase a book you've written, please don't use that form. You can learn more about marketing your title to the Library District on the Marketing your Publication information sheet.

Q: Do you have DVDs, CDs and educational software I can borrow?

A: Yes, the Library District has DVDs, CDs, and educational software that you can borrow.

Please visit your library's movie, music and CD Rom collections, to see what they have on shelf right now. You can also search the Library Catalog for movies, music and more. Change the drop-down box that says "view entire collection" to the type of media you're interested in. Then type in your title or key words, and search!

Q: How do I change the expiration date on one of my requests?

A: If you've requested a title, and put in a "Cancel if not filled by" date, and you haven't received that yet, your library can extend that date, by phone or email. Just call or write to your library, and we'll fix that for you.

If you leave the "Cancel if not filled by" date blank, when you place the request, the computer will automatically keep your request for six months.

Q: How do I find out how soon an item I requested will come in?

A: Generally, if you request an item, and there's a copy available in the Library District somewhere, it will take five to seven business days for it to arrive at your library.

As soon as the item is ready, the Library District will send you an email or a postcard, letting you know it's ready.

Your wait may be longer if:

  • There's a waiting list for the item.
  • The only copy is located at one of the out-of-town libraries.
  • Some copies of the item are non-requestable.

You can log into My Account, and see your request list. That will tell you where you are on the waiting list, and the status of your request.

If you have questions about your requested items, please "Contact Us". Be sure to include your library card number, your email address, and the title of the item. We'll check the status, and let you know what's happening with your request.

Q: How do I know if I can renew one of my items?

A: That is a feature that is not available on our new system. However, a feature this system does offer is the ability to see how many people are ahead of you "in line" for a specific item. This information will help you know whether an item is renewable. An item is NOT renewable if: there are people waiting for the item or if it is overdue at the time you attempt to renew it.

Q: How do I request an item that's not at my library?

A: If you find something in the library catalog that you want, but it's not at your library, you can request it through the library catalog, and have it delivered to your library for check-out.

When you find something you want in the library catalog, just click the "Request It" button. Enter your library card number and PIN.

You can leave the "not needed after" box blank. The computer will automatically keep your request on file for 6 months.

You will receive the "request successful" or "request unsuccessful" submitting your requests.

You can read more about requesting library items at the Requesting Items page.

If you're interested in Interlibrary Loan items, please read about them in the Interlibrary Loan Frequently Asked Question.

Q: How do I request an item?

A: The easiest way to request a book or other item is:
  1. Click on "My Account."
  2. Log in and search the catalog. To avoid many pages of results, be specific using keywords (for example, select "title" if you are searching for a specific book) or define the part of the collection you wish to search (for example, "book collection").
  3. When you find the items you want to request, click the "book bag" icon to Save/Request items. You'll know it worked, because the icon will change from Save/Request Items to say "Remove from Book Bag."
  4. When you have finished requesting your items, select "View Saved items" located at the top and bottom of the page.
  5. Now you have a choice. If you select "View Saved Items" again, you can email the list to yourself or someone else, or save the list to a disk. This is very useful if you are doing research and are compiling a list of possible sources, but are not ready to request the items.
  6. If you wish to request the item or items, click "Place Request on Saved Items."
  7. Select your pickup location and the "need by" date if you wish.
  8. To request only a few of your saved items, check off which items are you requesting and choose "Request Selected." To request all your saved items, select Request All.

Q: How do I request items you don't have in the library catalog? Interlibrary Loan or ILL?

A: If you've searched the library catalog, and the item you're interested in isn't there, you may be able to request it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). We will check other library districts in the United States to see if there's a copy we can borrow for you to check out. Sometimes we cannot find a copy to borrow, but we'll try.

Click on Interlibrary Loan, on the left side of the library web site. Then select "Books, Conference Proceedings, & Dissertations". Select the author, title, etc., search, and enter your information. (Hint: if you know the ISBN, that is the fastest way to search!) You may need to be patient after you click "Submit". The computer is searching in all the libraries in the United States. It can take a while.

When you get back the results information, click on the words "View Search Results". That will give you the entire list the computer found.

Click on the item you're interested in. Then, click on the button that says "Request." You might have to scroll to the right to find that button.

Enter your library card number and PIN. You can leave the "cancel if not filled by" box empty. The computer will keep your request on file for six months automatically. If the library cannot get your request, we'll let you know.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to enter the name of your library in the Comment section. That's the only way we'll know where to send that item.

Click on "Submit Request". You'll see a message that tells you whether your request was accepted.

You may not see your ILL requests in "My Account" right away. It can take a couple of days for that to update, depending on the processing. After that, you can check on the status of your request in My Account. It generally takes two to six weeks for an ILL request to come in, and you can keep that for three weeks only.

You can read more about Interlibrary Loan, and its special rules and requirements (scroll down to see the rules), in the Interlibrary Loan FAQs.

Q: How do I use the library catalog?

A: There are several ways to use the library catalog. The fastest way is right from the library web page. Look at the top of the page for the search box, next to the words "Search For:" You can do a quick search right there. It will automatically look for a title for you, but you can change the drop down "Title" box to "Subject", "Author", etc.

You can also click on the "Library Catalog" link on the left side of the web page. That will let you search the library catalog and more! You can also search for magazine articles, encyclopedia articles and much more from that page. To search only the library catalog, just use the search box in the center of that page. If you want to search for even more resources, click next to one or more of the topics at the bottom of that page. That will add some of the Library District's databases to your search.

If you need help searching, please call your library. They can help you find what you need.

You can read more about searching the library catalog on the library catalog help page. Scroll down to "How Do I Search?", right under the "How Do I...?" topics.

Q: What is an InfoGuide?

A: An InfoGuide brings a lot of information about a particular subject, together onto one page. InfoGuides include databases, books, websites, library resources, and can even help you search the library catalog!

You can see InfoGuides about General Information, Business and Legal, Cultural Diversity, Health and Wellness, and Education.

When you go to a specific InfoGuide on a particular subject, you'll see the databases at the top, and then helpful websites and other resources below that.

On the left side of the page, you'll see book lists for different age levels. Click on your age level to see the whole book list.

Below the book lists, on the bottom left of the page, you'll see a heading "For More Library Resources Try…," and several subjects. When you click on one of those subjects, the computer will automatically search the library catalog for you, and show you titles your library has on that subject.
