Joy Goldstein: Southwest Spirit

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is inspired by the Southwest landscape – travels in California, Utah, Arizona and my home state of Nevada. In my paintings, not only am I trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, but also my inner experience. What I feel can be awe, peace, self-reflection, adventure, a nakedness to God, or a genuine tactile connection to my family.

Coming from the lushness of California’s terrain, seeing the beauty of the desert took some time. Now it has become a source of inspiration. My surrounding natural environment is a place where I find refuge, a place where I can connect to my spirituality – being in nature renews my spirit.

BIOGRAPHY

Joy Goldstein is a Las Vegas painter working mostly in oils and acrylics, and experiments with custom CNC-milled panels for her paintings. Originally from the Philippines, her family moved to Panorama City, CA and eventually settled in Las Vegas at the age of 10.

She has a bachelor of fine arts degree from UNLV, as well as certifications in graphic design / web design from CSN. She has experience in faux finishing, graphic design and portrait painting. In 2020, in an effort to find some peace and distraction from everything that was going on, she started doing paintings for herself again, using images from recent travels with her family.

Ever since, she has fallen in love once again with the simple act of applying colorful gooey substances to a surface, and the challenge of creating something beautiful and personal.

“The act of making art for me isn’t to get to a specific end, but it’s to continue in exploring my ideas and skills, and just get to a place where I’ve discovered something.”
