Self PorTRAITS by Zully Mejia

In her exhibition, artist Zully Mejia puts a spin on the self-portrait by presenting paintings of everyday women whom she admires. Each woman is portrayed in a state of confidence, expressing characteristics she is proud of. Self PorTRAITS seeks to expand the notion of self beyond physical appearance or an amalgamation of people we surround ourselves with. It instead places importance on role models and the traits we admire in those individuals as a reflection of ourselves.

Zully Mejia’s practice derives from her identity as a woman of color and her desire to shift the cultural stereotypes associated with that identity.
